Clients will use this API for all their interactions with this library. It's made into an interface (of which there will only be a single implementation) simply for documentation purposes. But that also allows clients to mock the library if wanted or to have a thread-safe wrapper, as the library itself is not thread-safe, while keeping the same interface.
